The Box Project

The box project was an induction week task. We were all given an enclosed space bounded by wooden shutters and instructed to be creative with the space.

My initial idea was to do a lighting installation in the manner of Turrell but on a smaller scale. But after many fruitless hours with lights and cardboard boxes at home I gave up. Logically I was not going to succeed as Turrell has been doing his stuff for years.

Plan B was a shop window inviting people to use film in their photography.

I gathered together a collection of old photographs bought on eBay.
Using a couple of old o/dated films I exposed them deliberately overexposing to get a stream of black frames. I scratched slogans into the film, taped them to blank sheets and scanned them. I printed these images onto A3 sheets of paper.

I gathered together some of my own film cameras and a stack of unused film.

I had a big bag of 120 spools which I wired together into a double helix to resemble DNA.

Using a sky background sheet draped over the area which became my shop window I set about arranging the shop window.

On a covered table with the cameras I scattered polaroid pictures and large format negatives.

The 'DNA' was suspended in the window using a plamp.

I kept the lighting simple, just using daylight from the skylight. I reasoned that this kind of window would not have expensive lighting just a light in the top and daylight from the window.

Following feedback from Andy I converted one of the images to black and white.
