Sign of the times - 25 years on. Andy
We considered some quotes taken from a photo book published 25 years ago in Manchester without looking at the images. The purpose being to discuss the question - How long does it take for a photograph to become separated from it's original context?
Task
To make between 4 and 6 prints for the final hand in as well as a powerpoint presentation documenting your working process and journey to the final set.
The prints needn't be any larger than A5 and can be laser/inkjet or other. They are purely for peer appraisal and the images should be included in the powerpoint.
The emphasis of this project is in the method of production and style of presentation, which should be experimental and as diametrically opposite to your current/previous methods as possible.
My choice of subject is the disposable coffee cup.
It currently causes a great deal of waste and litter in towns and cities all over the world.
We are hearing about initiatives to reduce the number of plastic bags used and being discarded. Hopefully the same kind of approach will be taken to reduce the number of coffee cups.
Maybe 25 years from now the picture will be different.
25 years ago we only ever saw these coffee cups in the hands of stylish American city dwellers striding to work on 80s TV series.
Coffee is a style product and is widely advertised. People buy into the image.
For the submission I chose mobile phone photography to record the rise in the use of take away coffee cups.
The cups are an example of our environmentally unfriendly, throw away society.
The reason I chose to use my phone was to take throw away snapshots. All my other photography, even fast paced wildlife photography, involves manual settings, lens choice, composition and care.

This is England
What images summarise todays England to you?
Which photographers/artists have documented or impacted upon our national persona?
Is there a sartorial code; a North/South visual divide; or the lesser mentioned East/West one (which is more politically motivated than cultural)
You should create a portfolio of images that provide a narrative for your view of the state of the nation.
You will need to make between 4 and 6 prints for the final hand-in as well as a powerpoint presentation documenting your working process and journey to the final set.

A google search of 'northern England' yielded a selection of images of hills and rugged rural areas examples below.
A similar search of 'southern England' brought up softer, fertile landscape and the south coast.
After researching English photographers and views I could not work up any enthusiasm for this project. Whilst listening to others discussing their plans I hit upon the idea of making this project about the taking of the photographs not the images themselves.
During half term I will be doing a road trip based around the centre of England, Fenny Drayton. I will drive to locations North, South, East and West of Fenny Drayton and take photograph facing directly towards the centre of England - English inward looking.
I will use my Canon DSLR with a full frame sensor equivalent to a 35mm neg size and 50mm prime lens (considered to be a standard lens on 35mm camera)
By printing off the map above and marking a 120cm (100miles) diameter circle round the arrow to identify 4 suitable points.
30th October my 500mile drive round the country took me 14 hours, starting at 5am heading towards Chesterfield and finishing stuck on the motorway on the way back from. Little Stretton. The twin blackspots of Runcorn and Widnes bridge followed by Lymm and Croft junction were at a standstill due to commuter traffic and an accident. Added two hours to my trip.
The final images
North - Morning light just outside Chesterfield, Derbyshire
East - Steam trains and the A1 Stibbington, Cambridgeshire
South - Ancient roads and byways Over Kiddington, Oxfordshire
West - border country Little Stretton, Shropshire
Sound and Vision
For this task we were given three pieces of music and produce a moving image - GIF, video etc inspired by the music. I was in Tanzania at the time and did not get the pieces of music until I returned. Andy had told us the music would be a variety of genres including classical. Classical music was inflicted on me as a child and brings back memories of long boring car journeys.
I shot some videos of the road rolling past at different speeds in the hope that one would fit the music.
21st November Andy took us through the process of creating a GIF from a series of images taken of Jack in the studio.
These images were imported into photoshop and a GIF was created.

Whilst working on my Tanzania images and listening to the provided music I decided to create a GIF from a series of images of the Masai men challenging each other to jump higher.
As the images flicked past in preview the men seemed to hang in the air. I don't have photoshop at home so I used Gickr to create a small 10 image GIF see below link.

The main GIF for submission will be finished on a college computer before the presentation on thursday.
