the possible uses for photographic images. Using the portfolio of work produced
for Professional Practice, output your work in as many ways as you can. Select
modes of output and exhibition that are as sympathetic and relevant for the
style and type of work and the direction that you envisage your career
developing.
Present – Evidence
of range of image use to be presented in seminar for group comment.
Deadline – May
Seminar 2 assessment week, date to be advised.
My original intention was to use photographs of spinning and weaving tools and print them using cyanotype with a view to exhibition in the museum. Due to my injuries I may not recover quickly enough to carry this out. The leaf prints have printed more successfully than I had hoped so I may still be able to exhibit in the museum.
The prints themselves -
The printing of images on calico may be a step too far whilst I only have the use of my right hand.
The prints are square, I intend to mount them in a box frame, unflattened away from the glass so the nature of the paper is on full display.
Following a tutorial with Andy I am going to use my prints in three (at least) different ways -
- Exhibition at the Whittaker Gallery
- guerrilla/viral tactics - careful placement of the prints above head height on trees in Roddlesworth Woods, with accompanying leaflet in the pub/village noticeboard and social networks
- Darwen Pine Shop
For the exhibition at the Whittaker Gallery I am going to produce composite images with etched glass laid on top of the cyanotype prints to give extra depth to the images. The etched pattern will be on the inside of the photo frame glass. The size of the air gap and lighting of the display will have to be determined by experimenting.
A meeting with Claire Williams from Etched Studio has given me some ideas and parameters. For the ones in the woods I have given her some reject prints to experiment on. I would like the paper to be etched on the white areas to give a pattern still when the cyanotypes have faded. It will also affect how the image decomposes in the weather.

Let the experiments begin.
6th Feb A previous print on the same paper pinned on my shed wall to see how the paper and print itself weathers. Will photograph it periodically showing how it changes.
4 weeks later the print is still very vibrant so I am confident that the prints to be placed in the woods will maintain their colour.
A second set of prints have been done to go into the woods which have slightly less contrast to prevent them from shining out like a blue beacon and looking out of place.
These will be laser etched in the pale areas by - Etched Studio.
Guerilla Exhibition
The images have now been etched. The first pair were not etched as the practice pieces showed that the lines were too close together for the size of the grain in the paper itself. All the details in the leaf were lost when etched.
There is an accompanying blog for the guerrilla exhibition in the woods.
The blog address was also printed using cyanotype process and placed along the paths leading to the images.

The exhibition itself -
The images were nailed to trees around 7ft off the ground. I chose paths which were well used but not the very wide paths patrolled by the United Utilities maintenance vehicles. The area is owned by United Utilities and I did not want any "officials" removing any of the images.
The images were sited in pairs with each half of the pair within site of each other keeping the connection between the two.
Interestingly enough although several walkers, cyclist and runners saw me and my assistant walking through the woods carrying stepladders, nobody made any comment other than 'good afternoon' or 'nice day'
I had considered marking the position of each image on a map to be on the blog and displayed at the entrances to the woods but decided to leave their discovery more to chance and leave the publicity to social networking.
The idea of this exhibition was to place the images of the leaves back into the environment to be stumbled upon rather than a curated and controlled exhibition which leads the viewer around and points out every detail.
Four weeks on there has been good feedback locally by word of mouth about the images and the images are all still in situ and ageing nicely settling into their environment.
Urban Exhibition
Following a meeting with Claire Tymon at Blackburn is Open a vacant shop front will be used to display the first set of prints, as they are without mounting.
The location was chosen as it is a rundown urban area in complete contrast to the handcrafted, rural nature of the prints. Each print will be suspended on silver metal wire and secured with coloured metal clips to further emphasise its contrast with the surroundings.
Behind the prints will be dark/black material to block out the distracting view of the litter strewn shop interior.

Personal Artefact
A handmade book which can be opened conventionally or concertina style to display the contents.
Images resized and printed in pairs on acetate sheets to form the negatives.

The pages were printed on the the same watercolour paper as before |
and the covers printed on calico. |
An A4 sheet of MDF was cut down to make the front and back covers. |
The pages were scored, folded and glued together |
the calico was spray mounted to the pieces of board |
both covers |
attaching the ribbon |
lining the cover |
the finished article |
I have created a gallery on my personal website to display these and future handmade prints which can be found here -
