My Dissertation Proposal
To examine the work of stock image libraries with a view to
using them to make a living as a travel photographer. During the research
process I have taken photographs whilst on trips to Africa and selected a
portfolio of images to sell to an image library. This will give a practical
insight into the whole process.
Image libraries
·
How did image libraries develop? In this section
I will research how the libraries came to be established. The history of buying
and selling of images up to the digital age where images are readily available
in the internet.
·
What is their role? The apparent freely
available extensive range of images in modern life gives the impression that
images are free to download and use. Their use online is vital as we are an
image led society. There has to be some protection for the photographer and the
owner of individual images. I will look at the legal protection and rights of
the photographer and how the library protects its investments.

Libraries/agencies. Is there a difference
between libraries and agencies?
·
Different types of libraries. There are a wide
range of libraries online, from the prestigious Getty Images, genre specific
libraries such as The Biology Image Library, community based The Orkney Image
Library and recent developments like iStock who hold a wide range and sell
comparatively cheaply.

Does the choice of images of a specific subject
or location promote a biased view of the subject? Are photographers following
their agenda on commissions? Ethical issues.
Travel photography
·
What is the purpose of travel photography?
Images to entice a visitor to a specific location. To show the location off at
its best – aesthetic images that do more than record what is actually there.
·
Research the location and the weather conditions
to capture the location at its best.
·
Wide range of images covering different genres
landscape, wildlife, street photography, portraits etc.
The images
·
What kind of images sell, is there a specific
niche within a genre that is in fashion at the moment? Most libraries have
online galleries showing their stock of images and many have a section to show
the most commonly requested image type.
·
An image must fit into the technical
requirements of the library and the more prestigious libraries have stricter
requirements. They include; the camera used, the resolution, TIFF v JPEG,
metadata, keyword tagging and level of manipulation allowable.

Royalty Free v Rights Managed
·
I will examine the process of taking the
photograph for sale and exhibition and how it differs from my usual methods.
